Pattern Picks : 5 Bias Cut Skirts

Pattern Picks : 5 Bias Cut Skirts

Bias cut skirts have seen something of a revival in the last few years and aren't showing any let up in popularity this winter.

I've currently got a beautiful purple skirt on my sewing table, inspired by blog team member Rachel, who made a stunning version using my satin backed crepe last winter.

(I'm using the Viki Sews Sati Skirt in Purple Satin Backed Crepe)

Chic and flattering, with the versatility to be dressed up or down, a bias cut skirt really is a winter wardrobe staple.

What is a skirt cut on the bias?

Usually, a garment is cut in line with the grain/weave direction of the fabric. This is to prevent any stretching out of the fabric and to ensure it hangs correctly.

A bias cut garment is deliberately cut on a 45 degree angle to the grain line.

This means that the finished garment is slightly stretchier and drapes better. Giving a skirt a soft and fluid silhouette.

Fabric Suggestions

A bias cut skirt is best made in a woven fabric with good drape, examples would include:

  • Satin or silk - my range of satin backed crepes are perfect for this!
  • Viscose/rayon - make a light weight summer version using viscose challis or a more dressed down winter skirt using viscose twill.
  • Crepe - triple crepe hangs beautifully, check out my range of colours for a cosy and smart skirt.
  • Jersey - as an alternative, a viscose jersey would make a soft and casual bias skirt - particularly lovely for the summer time.
Happy Sewing!
