Viscose fabric, also known as rayon, is a popular textile in the fashion industry due to its versatility and affordability. It is a semi-synthetic fabric made from regenerated cellulose fibres derived from wood pulp, bamboo, or other natural sources.
Characteristics and Composition
Viscose fabric is made from regenerated cellulose fibres, which are chemically processed to make a soft and draping fabric. It is a thin, silky fabric that is perfect for producing flowy dresses, skirts, and blouses because of its smooth, silken texture. The breathable and moisture-absorbing qualities of viscose fabric make it a popular material for summer apparel.
Thickness and Weight
From lightweight to medium-weight, viscose fabric is offered in a range of weights and densities. The drape and hang of the cloth can be influenced by its weight. Viscose fabrics that are thicker can also be used to make structured clothing like jackets and pants.
Durability
Compared to other fabrics like cotton or spandex, viscose cloth has less stretch and recovery. Some producers may add elastane to enhance the fabric's elasticity and recovery. Viscose fabric can lose its shape over time, so it may need to be gently stretched and reshaped after washing.
If care is not taken when washing and drying viscose cloth, it may shrink. The fact that viscose cloth may bleed or fade when exposed to sunlight or particular detergents should also be noted. It is advised to wash viscose cloth in cold water and hang it to dry to avoid colour fading and shrinkage.
Features and Functions
Dresses, skirts, blouses, and scarves are among the lightweight, flowy clothes that are frequently made from viscose fabric. Its soft and silky texture makes it a common option for lingerie and lining materials. Viscose cloth can also be used to make household textiles like curtains and upholstery.
